Dan Brown owes his writing career to Sydney Sheldon, whose "Doomsday Conspiracy" lit a fire in his belly. Salman Rushdie - Born in India in 1947, Rushdie's first novel was published in 1975. Another, Midnight's Children, earned him the Booker Prize in 1981, but it was his fourth novel, the Satanic Verses, that sparked worldwide controversy and led to the author receiving death threats from Islamic groups for its supposed blasphemy against the religion. The Orthodox Iranian government issued a Fatwah - death sentence - against Rushdie in 1989 and the writer was forced into hiding.
